Dixie Dean hits 60!

Dexie Dean scores 60

On the 5 May 1928, a crowd of over 48,000 packed Goodison Park, to see what they hoped would be the climax of the greatest feat of individual goalscoring in the history of the League.  Everton had already secured the League title  and now their leading goalscorer Dixie Dean needed to  score three goals against Arsneal to beat the record set the previous season by Middlesbrough's George Camsell in the Second Division. Arsenal scored within two minutes of the kick-off, but less than a minute later Dean equalized when he converted a Critchley corner. When, a few minutes later, Dean was brought down in the box and netted the resultant penatly, the crowd went wild.  Shaw got two goals for the visitors thanks to some generous defending by Everton. The crowd had to wait with bated breath until the 82nd minute before Alex Troup, provider of so many of Dean's goals, placed a perfect corner for Dean to rise above the Arsenal defence at the far post and power a typical header into the net.  The resulting roar from the crowd could be heard all over the city.  According to the Birmingham Weekly Mercury 'There were scenes of wild excitement at Goodison Park when Everton drew with Arsenal 3-3, and Dean completed his "hat" trick eight mnutes from the end and thus set up a new record of 60 goals for all divisions of English football. The centre-forward was cheered to the echo, he was hugged by his comrades, and warmly congratulated by the visitors.' At the end of the game Everton were presented with the Championship trophy.  Dean easily topped the scoring list that season with his nearest rivals, Bell (Burnley) and Halliday (Sunderland) each scoring 35 goals.
