Man City - Champions relegated 1928

The 1937-38 season witnessed an unusually close First Division campaign with only sixteen points separating winners Arsenal from relegated Manchester City and West Bromwich Albion. Wolves, top by a point on the last day of the season, lost 1-0 at Sunderland, while Arsenal beat Botlon 5-0 to take their fifth title in eight years. But the biggest drama was unfolding at the other end of the table.  A week before the end of the season, any of the bottom 11 teams could have been relegated.  The last day saw six teams joint bottom with 36 points. Birmingham got out of trouble with a 4-1 win at Leicester, while Grimsby Town, Portsmouth and Stoke City all had home wins. The crucial match was at cup finalists Huddersfeild Town's ground on 7 May 1938 with Manchester City the visitors. Huddersfield won it 1-0 to stay up while the First Division's top scorers (80 goals) and previous year's champions Manchester City were relegated. According to the Birmingham Weekly Mercury 'It was a hectic game, but full of thrills and good football. Manchester played well enough to remain in the First Division, but their weak finishing was not good enough. Brook and Neilson shone for the City, and Hesford, Young, and Willingham for Huddersfield. Both goals had hair's break escapes, Wiienand (Huddersfield) twice going within inches'.     Manchester City therefore became the only team to have been relegated in the season after winning the league title as well as the only team to ever be relegated from the top tier of English football having scored the most goals in that particular season. To add insult to injury, Manchester United were promoted from Division Two.
