Club Histories

From humble beginnings, the rise and fall and rise again of Southampton FC has been a real rollercoaster ride. The early days were a success in the Southern League but two FA Cup Final defeats were heartbreakers. But the Ted Bates era of the 60s were halcyon days for the club and they were promoted to the top flight. But it was the 70s and 80s that really put Southampton on the map. That barmy May day in 1976, when Lawrie McMenemy's side beat the great Manchester United in the FA Cup Final, is still the club's finest achievement. And the marquee signing of European Footballer of the Year Kevin Keegan from SV Hamburg in 1980 was one of the biggest transfer coups ever. And the second place Southampton achieved in Division One in 1983/84 remains the club's best ever league finish. But the dark days of relegation from the Premier League, administration, and a further relegation from the Championship cast a shadow over the club. This lovingly compiled book is a photographic celebration of Hampshire's greatest club, drawing on the thousands of outstanding pictures contained within the Daily Mirror's huge archive. All the club's legendary figures, from Wayman to Bates, Paine, McMenemy, Ball, Channon, Keegan, Shearer and Le Tissier are of course featured, but this is much more than a visual record of famous names and great games. It provides a unique, behind-the-scenes insight into the day-to-day atmosphere of a great club down the years. The nooks and crannies of the old intimate Dell and, more recently, their impressive St Mary's home, the players, the fans and the off-beat quirks and curiosities that help make Saints such a special club. Wonderfully nostalgic and hugely evocative, a must for all Southampton fans.

Manchester United The Biography history

The book follows the club's extraordinary journey from its birth in the railway works of Newton Heath to its current status as Premier League and European champions. The key stages in United's history will, of course, be covered: the Munich Air Crash of 1958, which saw the best part of an entire team (the Busby Babes) being killed; becoming the first English team to win the European Cup in 1968 (with Bobby Charlton and George Best); the dominance of the club in the Premiership; the controversial sale to American tycoon Malcolm Glazer, right up to Moscow 2008. But by drawing on the recollections of everyone from players and managers to fans and backroom staff, Jim has unearthed enough new material to interest die-hard fans and casual supporters alike. A fascinating history of a remarkable football club, by one of Britain's best-known and most popular sports writers.

My Seventy Years of Spurs is veteran sportswriter Norman Giller's unique story of Tottenham Hotspur over the seven decades he has followed the Lilywhites. Norman saw the legendary 'push and run' side lift the league title in 1950/51, then as a press-box reporter he chronicled Tottenham's historic league and FA Cup double in 1960/61. He has been an eyewitness to all their triumphs and tribulations right up to the surreal 2020/21 season. Join him on a trip down White Hart memory lane in the company of each of the 21 managers who have been in charge during his 70 years as a supporter and reporter - from Arthur Rowe in the 1950s to the current master of the new Lane, Jose Mourinho. The book is introduced by Steve Perryman, captain of back-to-back FA Cup-winning Tottenham teams, who holds the club appearances record. My Seventy Years of Spurs provides an intimate and informative insight into the club from a renowned sportswriter who truly knows his Spurs.

Third Lanark History

The summer of 1967 was Scottish football’s finest hour. Celtic won the European Cup. Rangers reached the final of the European Cup Winners’ Cup. Kilmarnock got to the semis of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup. Scotland defeated world champions England at Wembley. It was the best of times. With one exception. Third Lanark Athletic Club, one of the country’s oldest and most successful football teams, a founder member of the Scottish Football Association, and to date one of only four teams to defeat both Rangers and Celtic in the Scottish Cup Final, played its final game. And hardly anybody seemed to notice. Why?

Michael McEwan brings rich archival research together with interviews with the key surviving players in the Third Lanark squad from that final season, as well as opposition players and other relevant figures from the era.

Over 50 years on, the demise of Third Lanark remains one of Scottish football's darkest hours – and, by ludicrous coincidence, it occurred in the midst of one of its brightest.

Ipswich Town FC History

Ipswich Town has a long history and, since its foundation in 1878, has had a great deal of success, including as Football League champions in 1962 and winners of both the FA Cup (1978) and the UEFA Cup (1981). Two of its managers, Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson, went on to achieve greatness in the game. As a result there have been several comprehensive club histories. This book is intended to be different from the traditional history of Ipswich Town Football Club. It is both a history of Ipswich Town and a social history - recording and exploring the relationship between the football club, the town of Ipswich and the wider county of Suffolk. Covering the period from 1878 to the present day, it uses the voices of people involved with the club, including supporters, players and former players, owners, administrators and local writers, to describe the club's history within its social context, how changes have affected the club and how developments in football itself have made an indelible impact upon both the football club and the local community.
